A family of five — six if you include the dog — wanted to update their Fox Chapel Colonial to better reflect their lifestyle. They needed ample storage, hard-wearing materials, an accessible powder room and better flow between their living area, kitchen and the outside. Design challenges included a low ceiling, limited light and previous remodels that altered the functionality of their space

The Mud Room

The original garage was used as a storage space but what this family needed was a spot to corale all the bits and bobs of a busy family. We created a casual feel in the mudroom by using patinaed tiles and ample storage for kids, adults and the dog. Custom cabinets were built, which function as lockers for backpacks, coats, hats and anything else the kids would need. It also includes integrated charging stations for electronic devices. Now everything has a place -- even the dog’s food and water.

The Kitchen

The owner is an avid chef who loves to cook and entertain but hates clutter, the kitchen required lots of built-in and hidden storage areas, integrated appliances, custom cabinetry, a 48" range and custom hood, which accommodates hidden spice cupboards. We reconfigured the layout to improve the flow of the home and connect the kitchen to the outdoors. Double doors lead to the new deck, a beautiful view of the garden, truly connecting their living space with the outdoors. Larger doorframes connect the rooms with a sight-line that is both beautiful and functional. We upholstered stools in high performance fabric to withstand spills and a great deal of use.

The Coffee Bar 

The family wanted a fully functioning coffee barand appliance storage. Custom cabinetry with integrated storage for coffee pods and refrigerator drawers for easy access to bottled water and other drinks. With warm weather approaching, the family can grab drink and head directly to their new deck.

The Powder Room

With plans for a mudroom, the family no longer needed the coat closet, but they did need a first-floor powder room that was easily accessible to guests. The new space is infused with old-world charm thanks to the Morris & Co. wallpaper and the warm fixtures.
