"Ce Pot Bleu" Impasto Painting by Cliberge

A charming vintage French still life painting by artist Cliberge, featuring a vibrant arrangement of fruit and a sculptural dark blue pitcher against a richly textured crimson background.

Expressive in both color and composition, this petite painting beautifully captures the spontaneity and artistic character of French modernist-inspired still life painting.

The composition features a striking deep navy blue pitcher surrounded by three warm orange-red fruits and a brilliant yellow lemon, arranged across a softly illuminated tabletop. The vivid colors create a beautiful contrast against the dramatic burgundy and crimson background, giving the painting an energetic yet sophisticated presence.

Richly layered brushstrokes and expressive applications of paint bring extraordinary texture and dimension to the composition. The artist's confident use of color is particularly compelling, with saturated reds, vibrant oranges, golden yellows, and unexpected accents of pale blue and lavender creating a lively visual rhythm.

The painting's bold, painterly style recalls the expressive traditions of French Post-Impressionist and modernist still life painting, where color, texture, and artistic interpretation take precedence over strict realism.

The dark pitcher provides a strong visual anchor, while the brightly colored fruit introduces warmth and movement. The result is a wonderfully balanced composition that feels both playful and sophisticated.

Presented unframed, with its painted canvas edges visible, the artwork has an appealing simplicity that allows the expressive brushwork and vibrant palette to take center stage.

Measuring 11-3/4" H x 11-3/4" W, this intimate square painting is ideal for display in a kitchen, breakfast room, library, gallery wall, or layered bookshelf arrangement.

A beautiful example of vintage French still life artwork, this painting brings a distinctive sense of color, personality, and European artistic character to a thoughtfully collected interior.

Why We Love It

We love the bold color palette and wonderfully expressive texture of this painting. The dramatic crimson background provides a beautiful contrast to the dark blue pitcher and vibrant fruit, creating a composition that feels both energetic and thoughtfully balanced.

The richly layered paint gives the artwork a tactile quality, while the artist's loose, confident brushwork introduces a sense of spontaneity and charm.

Its petite square format is especially appealing, making it easy to incorporate into a collected interior without sacrificing visual impact.

We also love the simplicity of the unframed presentation, which allows the painting's rich texture and vibrant colors to speak for themselves.

Design Notes

This painting would be especially beautiful in an interior layered with French antiques, bleached oak, warm plaster walls, natural linen, aged brass, and rustic ceramics.

The vibrant red, orange, and yellow palette offers a wonderful opportunity to introduce warmth and color into an otherwise neutral space. Pair it with ivory, chocolate brown, olive green, tobacco, or natural wood finishes for a sophisticated, collected look.

We particularly love the idea of displaying this painting in a French country kitchen or breakfast room, perhaps above an antique wooden sideboard or alongside a collection of vintage ironstone and pottery.

For a more contemporary setting, allow the painting to stand alone against a warm ivory wall, where its expressive colors and textured surface can become the focal point.

It would also be a beautiful addition to a gallery wall of vintage French paintings, where its bold palette can create an unexpected contrast with more traditional landscapes and portraits.
